Historical Background and Description

In honor of the 1^st anniversary of the launch of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in which “We, the Peoples of the World”, have committed to addressing together our common challenges in a holistic, positive and transformative way for all people & planet.

The Give Me 5 Campaign recognizes that outstanding action towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, inline with the United Nations Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, is the key to providing solutions to global concerns and the assurance of rights and well-being of future generations. The aim of the 'Champion for People & Planet' global prize is to inspire and generate collective engagement in an annual worldwide celebration and to foster the growth of a culture of peace. Members of the UN community and the public are invited to participate.

In July 2015 at United Nations 3^rd Conference for Financing for Development, the Give Me 5 Campaign was born out of the necessity to finance the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The Give Me 5 Campaign is based on research by academia and the United Nations which show that with the equivalent of only 5% of global defense spending we could achieve this new global-social contract known as the UN Sustainable Development Goals. It is an urgent call to ‘We, the Peoples of the World’ to prioritize Sustainable Development in all areas of life, including government financing, private enterprise, and civil society.

Criteria of the Award:

• Someone who has showed inspirational leadership and committed to impactfull action towards the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
• Someone that has demonstrated the vision and spirit of the United Nations as expressed through the UN Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
• Someone that has done exemplary work in promoting action at the United Nations and beyond and is widely recognized and highly respected for his/her collaborative work.
• Be a member of the Give Me 5 Community
