For a sustainable living carbon-neutral mobility is a key component. There have been numerous ways and technologies that aim to achieve this. Mass transit is always the most efficient way of transportation. However, we still have millions of vehicles circulating around the world. Most of these cars burn fossil fuels unfortunately. There are new developments with biodiesel vehicles but it take a tremendous amount of energy to create biodiesel. Also there are electric cars. These are 0-carbon at the tail pipe, but the electricity used to power them may not be carbon free generated. These cars are also still expensive and have usually low mileage in comparison (about or less than 300 miles or 480 kilometers). This is perfectly acceptable for daily commutes and running errands throughout the day. But for long road trips this might seem inconvenient, not to mention it takes while (at least 15 mins for 80% charge in the best case) to recharge the battery. As well as not having a prevalent charging station infrastructure yet, these are still seen as inconveniences. But there is another technology that has had a recent boom mainly in the transportation industry. This would be hydrogen powered cars using hydrogen cells. It is very much similar to a conventional car, once you run out of fuel you would plug your car up to a hydrogen pump. The hydrogen inside the pump is pressurized and when it mixes with oxygen it helps create electricity. This is more convenient then electricity because it does not take the same amount of time as charging a battery. The downside is hydrogen pumps are not networked like gas pumps. So it is inconvenient at the moment, but in the near future electricity and hydrogen powered cars will be viable options for even the road trip lovers. Which technology do you like best?
